A Systematic Review of Railway Trespassing: Problems and Prevention Measures

Railway trespassing is a growing problem in both rail and road transport. A high percentage of accidents are result the former. Factors that contribute to range from poor decision-making by trespasser general ignorance traffic rules infrastructure (e.g., lack fences along tracks prevent trespassing). The objective this study was provide systematic review known literature on railway tracks. methodology implemented for collection accordance with PRISMA method. searched using keywords: trespassing, accidents, factors, prevention, detection, education Web Science Core Collection an additional search conducted through other databases. starting point n = 291 studies which total 72 publications were included ranging between 1953–2023. consisted 73.6% journal papers, 18.1% conference 8.3% expert reports. results formation of: (1) influence occurrence accidents: (a) locations frequent (b) temporal frequency (c) profile behaviour, (d) motivation knowledge (e) factors models accidents; (2) Measures prevention: measures, signalization, technological measures pilot preventive measures. main findings summarised discussed considerations future work.
